Will my dog get harmed if he swims in my spa ?
Our spa had chemicals to kills of any bacteria and I was just wondering if my dog swam in it and maybe drank some of the water will he get ill ?
Well, yes and no …. dogs DO it all the time without suffering ill effect but I would think attempting to prevent it would be wise as the various chemicals usually contain high levels of substances that might be difficult for a dog to deal with — they could cause kidney and/or liver issues and if the dog already has a predisposition to these issues that you are unaware of, it can actually cause shutdown of one or both of these systems… most of the water we have in the tap (that the dogs end up drinking unless you filter it or give bottled water) have these same chemicals — for the same reason.. but they aren’t usually in quite as high concentrations and still, who knows what your dog might be predisposed to and even if it doesn’t cause shut down at this point, it might make the dog more susceptable to big issues if other toxins are introduced – and dogs tend to find other toxins!
I have known dogs that do fine swimming in pools and sometimes in spas but I have also seen some issues with them so it might be best just to get him his own ’spa’ — I have gotten one of those large watering troughs and put water in for my dogs to ‘lounge’ in on hot days… maybe there would be some way to hock up a circulator with warm water added for ‘hot tub’ fun and then just dump it on the flower bed afterwards instead of having to add the chemicals we need in a spa that we can’t empty as readily?
BTW, for all the ‘natural nuts’ that think it would be horrible to expose their dogs to such awful things, I have had dogs (and people) get horrendous ‘natural’ issues from swimming in lovely brooks, rivers and beaches… the micro-organisms that can be found in all of these areas – naturally occuring ones – can be deadly… but we can’t just keep them in a sterile bubble…
