What size of hood/cover do I need for a 20 gallon(High) fish tank?
I tried one that would fit a 10 gallon regular tank thinking that since its a 20 gallon high it would fit, wrong. Too short. What size of hood do I need for a 20 gallon(high) tank?
The top of a “20 High” tank is 12 inches wide and 24 inches long. The actual tank cover is slightly smaller, of course, since it fits inside the tank frame.
A standard 10-gallon tank is 10 inches wide and 20 inches long, so yes, a cover for a 10-gallon tank is too short for your tank by about 4 inches.
However, a standard 15-gallon tank has the same “footprint” as a 20 High (12 by 24), so you can use the same cover for a 15 or for a 20 High. (The 20 high is just taller than the 15, hence the extra gallons.)
A “20 Long” tank, by the way, is 12 inches wide and 30 inches long, but only 12 inches high (the same height as a 15 gallon tank). There are various oddball shapes of 20-gallon tanks, but the “20 High” (12 x 24 x 16″) and the “20 Long” (12 x 30 x 12″) are by far the most common.
