Can I reduce my air-conditioning costs by covering vents?
We have a 3 bedroom, energy effiecent home. There’s only 2 of us and we really don’t use the 2 spare bedrooms. We have one set up as an office, but use is mostly on weekends. The second is set up as a guest room, but alas, no guests. I was thinking about covering the vents in those rooms so the air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard cooling the house. We keep the doors closed to those rooms anyway. Does anyone have any experience or expertise that would prove this would infact work? I found these magnetic covers at Home Depot, but I’d have to be convinced that I would save the $20 in electricity that they will cost me.
I would say not as much as you might think. I’ve tried this in a similar home and my bill didn’t drop at all. Doing other things like keeping filters clean, improving weather stripping around doors/windows, adding solar screens to afternoon windows will save you much more in the long run.
